Description
Zacuto Z-Drive Follow Focus System
Universal Direct Drive Follow Focus for Shoulder Rigs and Tripods
The Zacuto Z-Drive is a unique, professional-grade, direct drive follow focus unit engineered for filmmakers who require precise and responsive focus control—particularly in shoulder-mounted configurations. Designed with a 60-degree offset curve, the Z-Drive allows the focus mechanism to move away from the lens, enhancing ergonomic access while maintaining perfect alignment with the gear ring.
Ideal for Recoil Rig setups where the camera sits directly on the operator’s shoulder, the Z-Drive makes manual focus pulling smoother and more comfortable without needing complex setups or motorized systems.
Ergonomic Design for Single Operators
Unlike traditional follow focus units, the Zacuto Z-Drive is designed specifically for single-camera operators. Its curved, offset drive moves the focus knob forward and downward, optimizing hand positioning during shoulder-mounted operation. Whether you’re using a DSLR or cinema camera, the Z-Drive minimizes physical strain and allows accurate focus pulls on the move.
The unit is also reversible and position-flexible, making it easy to mount on either side of the lens and in various directions—ideal for camera assistants or tripod setups using a standard follow focus whip.
Universal Compatibility with Lenses
The Z-Drive uses a fixed 0.8 pitch gear, compatible with standard cine lenses. For photo lenses without gear teeth, Zacuto’s optional ZipGear Universal straps (sold separately) can be attached to achieve full compatibility. These adjustable straps fit most DSLR lenses and ensure smooth, slip-free operation.
If you require larger gear-to-lens contact, the Z-Drive also supports optional 60mm gear attachments (for Z-Drives manufactured after Dec 8, 2015). Older versions can be upgraded by contacting Zacuto directly.
