Description
Mo-Sys StarTracker Grass Valley Integration — Bring Virtual Studios into Focus
Create compelling virtual studio productions with a camera setup designed for simpler operation. Mo-Sys StarTracker Grass Valley Integration combines StarTracker camera tracking technology with compatible Grass Valley LDX cameras, supporting virtual sets and augmented broadcast graphics through an integrated solution. Developed through collaboration between Mo-Sys and Grass Valley, it reduces setup complexity while improving tracking robustness and reliability.
The integration reduces additional cabling and removes the need for bulky external tracking boxes. This cleaner camera configuration makes equipment easier to move between production locations and helps crews prepare for shooting more efficiently. Built-in support for preset offsets further contributes to a straightforward setup.
Turn Camera Movement into Convincing Virtual Imagery
Camera tracking connects the physical camera to the digital environment. As the camera moves, the graphics system needs accurate tracking information to keep virtual scenery and augmented reality elements correctly positioned within the image. This relationship is essential for making digital content appear naturally integrated with presenters, guests and the studio.
Mo-Sys camera tracking supports real-time virtual production and broadcast graphics workflows, helping maintain the relationship between camera movement and rendered imagery. For broadcasters developing virtual sets or AR presentations, tracking forms the foundation of a convincing visual result.
Optical Tracking with an Integrated Broadcast Workflow
StarTracker uses an optical tracking approach based on retroreflective markers installed on studio ceilings or lighting grids. By observing these markers, the system provides real-time camera position, rotation and lens data to support virtual studio production.
In Mo-Sys’s documented integration for the Grass Valley LDX 82, LDX 86 and LDX 86N series with XF Transmission, power and synchronisation are supplied internally to StarTracker. Tracking data travels through the camera’s hybrid fibre cable to the XCU in the control room, where it can be interfaced over IP with the virtual studio system.
This arrangement brings tracking into the broadcast camera infrastructure, reducing the separate connections and external components associated with an additional tracking installation. It provides a practical foundation for productions combining live camera images with virtual environments and augmented graphics.
Flexibility for Everyday Production
The camera remains suitable for conventional production when virtual graphics are not required. This flexibility allows teams to use the same camera across virtual and non-virtual programmes. An on-site upgrade option is also available for compatible existing Grass Valley LDX cameras.
Mo-Sys lists the following compatible models: LDX82, LDX86, LDX86n, LDX92, LDX96 and LDX98.
