Description
Mo-Sys Cinematic XR Focus – Bring Real and Virtual Worlds into Focus
Expand the creative possibilities of LED virtual production with Mo-Sys Cinematic XR Focus, a focus-control software feature that enables smooth transitions between physical subjects and virtual objects. Built for the Mo-Sys VP Pro ecosystem, it allows cinematographers and focus pullers to shift attention from an actor on set to an object appearing deep within the virtual environment—and back again. The result is a more expressive approach to cinematic storytelling, where real and digital elements share the same visual language.
Make Every Focus Pull Part of the Story
Focus is a powerful way to guide an audience’s attention. A foreground face can give way to a distant detail, revealing information and changing the emotional direction of a shot. Cinematic XR Focus brings this familiar filmmaking technique into LED volume production, allowing virtual scenery to play an active role in the composition.
For example, a shot can begin with a physical performer in focus before shifting attention to a virtual vehicle or character positioned beyond the apparent plane of the LED wall. By connecting these layers through a controlled focus transition, filmmakers can create a stronger sense of depth and a more convincing relationship between the subject and its surroundings.
Coordinated Physical and Virtual Focus Control
Cinematic XR Focus synchronizes lens-control input with Unreal Engine graphics. Working with Mo-Sys StarTracker, the system tracks the camera’s distance from the LED wall and coordinates the transition between physical lens focus and virtual scene focus.
Within VP Pro, physical focus is limited before reaching the LED surface to help avoid moiré, while the virtual camera continues the focus movement into the rendered environment. Accurate camera tracking and lens calibration support the alignment of these transitions with the spatial relationship between the camera, real subjects and virtual scene.
Familiar Control for Professional Focus Pullers
Designed around practical production workflows, Cinematic XR Focus enables operators to work through compatible wireless lens-control equipment. The system interprets controller input to manage both the physical and virtual focus planes, providing a familiar operating approach while extending what the focus puller can achieve within an XR scene.
Unreal Engine handles the rendered focus change in real time, allowing the cinematographer’s camera movement and the focus puller’s creative decisions to work together during the shot.
Built for LED Stages and XR Studio Workflows
Suitable for LED wall virtual production, mixed reality studios and in-camera visual effects workflows, Cinematic XR Focus operates within VP Pro’s real-time production environment. It can also be integrated into multi-camera LED stages when deployed with VP Pro XR Multi-cam.
Compatibility depends on the motor-control systems supported through VP Pro and the wider studio configuration. This makes Cinematic XR Focus a coordinated part of the virtual production pipeline, combining software, tracking, calibration and lens control to support cinematic focus behaviour.
Give Your Virtual Environment a Greater Role
Mo-Sys Cinematic XR Focus helps filmmakers use virtual elements as meaningful parts of an on-set scene. By enabling real-time focus changes between physical foreground subjects and digital backgrounds, it expands the creative possibilities of final-pixel LED production and gives cinematographers another way to shape depth, reveal detail and direct attention.
