Description
Mo-Sys NearTime™ – Cinematic Cloud Rendering for Unreal Engine Virtual Production
Bring your virtual environments to life with Mo-Sys NearTime, an automated cloud rendering service that connects on-set visualisation with high-quality VFX output. Built for Unreal Engine virtual production, NearTime allows crews to preview shots in real time and generate higher-quality renders after capture. It gives filmmakers a practical way to pursue cinematic image quality beyond the performance limits of real-time playback.
Creative Confidence on Set
Seeing the relationship between live action and virtual scenery helps directors and cinematographers make decisions while shooting. NearTime supports this approach through a dual workflow: real-time visualisation during capture, followed by automated rendering of a higher-quality version. Recognised with a 2021 HPA Award for Engineering Excellence, the technology was developed to connect immediate on-set feedback with the visual standards required for finished production.
Connected to Mo-Sys VP Pro
NearTime works within the Mo-Sys VP Pro ecosystem, linking Unreal Engine rendering with recorded production data. VP Pro combines real-time compositing, keying, synchronisation and recording, using camera and lens tracking information to align physical footage with virtual content.
Through its integration with Unreal Engine’s Movie Render Queue, this workflow allows teams to carry recorded takes forward into high-quality rendering. Timecode recording and FBX export also support the connection to established VFX pipelines, helping bridge the creative work completed on set and the finishing work that follows.
Flexible Rendering for Your Production
Choose to render every take immediately, process selected “circle takes”, or render edited clips with handles through an EDL. Movie Render Queue controls let you select resolution, codecs, quality settings and EXR layers according to your delivery requirements and render budget.
NearTime supports UHD, 4K and 8K output, giving productions flexibility when planning high-resolution deliverables. Timecode-locked renders and embedded metadata simplify alignment between re-rendered backgrounds and camera plates.
Delivery That Fits Your Workflow
Rendered files can be delivered through Frame.io, Adobe Flow Capture or S3. FBX export provides camera tracking and lens distortion data for traditional VFX tools. For additional rendering capacity, the NearTime Agent lets on-premises computers supplement cloud resources.
With Perforce version control in place, teams can also render earlier project versions or different virtual environments against the same recorded camera movement. NearTime is primarily designed for greenscreen production, with deployment possible in specific LED shooting scenarios.
Keep Editorial and Review Connected
NearTime’s cloud workflow also supports collaboration beyond the studio. Mo-Sys has demonstrated integration with Adobe’s Frame.io Camera to Cloud workflow, combining camera footage and virtual content into high-fidelity 4K composites for editorial and review. This approach helps creative teams assess VFX content while production is underway and makes rendered material accessible to collaborators working remotely.
Turn Your Virtual Vision into Cinematic Images
For teams building an Unreal Engine virtual production workflow, Mo-Sys NearTime brings together automated re-rendering, configurable output and connected delivery. Explore how NearTime can support your studio’s transition from on-set previews to polished virtual production imagery.
